Transforming Voices is an interdisciplinary research platform using collaborative experimental
filmmaking to explore contemporary vulnerability issues. Season 1 (La Frontera) explored women's vulnerability in Mexican-US borderlands. Season 2 (Repromob) focuses on different forms of vulnerability related to reproductive journeys.

Transforming Voices foregrounds the voice (as spoken utterance and sonic manifestation) in
the filmmaking process. Each film starts with a voice track onto which other sound tracks
and video tracks are built by different artists from around the world working collaboratively.
All vocal tracks are derived from interviews and conversations conducted by ethnographers
and social researchers with participants. More than 100 conversations and interviews have been conducted since the project began in late 2020.

The project started off with Dr Gaggiotti sending me a short vocal track which recounted a Mexican woman's struggles with in vitro fertilisation. My interpretation of this vocal track looked to illustrate the primordial bond between a mother and a child through an Ichthyostega, one of the first terrestrial vertebrates to inhabit the earth.
